Defibrillator Batteries
Every defibrillator battery has an expiration date. It is recommended to keep a close eye on this expiration date. Please replace the battery in time to ensure a fully functioning device. Be aware that the defibrillator battery can also be depleted before the expiration date, especially after numerous shocks have been administered during an emergency, which consumes a significant amount of power. A beeping sound or flashing light indicates that the battery needs to be replaced.

Lifespan of AED batteries
In addition to the lifespan of your defibrillator device (which is usually around 10 years), it's crucial to monitor the battery's lifespan.
Every defibrillator battery has a different lifespan. When a defibrillator is used regularly, the battery naturally depletes faster than when it remains on standby for years. Unfortunately, not every defibrillator indicates the state of charge of the battery. The lifespan of a defibrillator battery varies from 2 to 7 years, depending on the battery. You will be able to find the lifespan on the particular product page of the battery you are looking for. The battery's lifespan begins from the moment it is placed in the defibrillator.
- Batteries gradually lose charge, even when they are not in use. There are numerous factors that can can influence the battery's lifespan:
- The defibrillator has administered shocks during an emergency
- The storing temperature of the defibrillator is too high or too low
- The defibrillator was used for regular practice sessions
- The defibrillator self-tests are too frequent
- The defibrillator signals a malfunction, in this case it is recommended to remove the battery as soon as possible to prevent further depletion
- Leaving the battery unused on the shelf
- The defibrillator is more than 10 years old
- The electrodes are out of date
- The defibrillator software is outdated
Your defibrillator will give you a signal when the battery is almost at the end of its life, indicated by a light and/or a sound. Every defibrillator does this before the remaining capacity of the battery is too low for a defibrillator intervention. Many defibrillator batteries have an "install before" date. The battery should be installed in the device before this date. The manufacturer's indicated lifespan applies from this date.
How do you know when the defibrillator battery should be replaced?
The defibrillator conducts self-tests and detects when the battery is low. Different defibrillator brands signal this in different ways. A red blinking light may indicate a low battery or another malfunction. In the manual for your device you will be able to find what’s amiss. Your defibrillator might also start beeping when the battery is low.
Replacing the defibrillator battery yourself
Most defibrillator batteries can be easily replaced by the user. After inserting the new battery, the defibrillator will initiate a self-test. Once the device is ready for use, the status indicator will show this. It is also important to check the expiration date of the electrodes, as they need replacing more often than the battery.
